7 MARCH 2023 (TORONTO, ON) – “The Wolf”, 5th PROJEKT’s adventurous new EP, arrives today via their own independent label, Organik Rekords. This is the first in a trilogy of EPs: The Wolf, The Owl (2024), and The Bee (TBA).
With a kiss to your third eye, the cinematic art-rock band takes us on a mystical journey through ancient lands, painting with psychedelic sound and experimenting with unexpected genre-bending twists and turns.
Flowing effortlessly from dreamy shoegaze on Vagabond, to video game drum & bass on The Wrong Way, into the progressive krautrock of The Pace, and the avant-pop of EP opener, Autopilot Disengage, each song is a spell, bound by the haunting and ethereal vocals of Tara Rice. The music was written, composed, produced and recorded by Rice and Sködt McNalty, both multi-instrumentalists.
This new body of work was years in the making, an alchemical process inspired by Rice and McNalty’s 40-day journey under the Milky Way, following ley lines on the Camino Santiago de Compostela (also known as The Way of The Goddess, or simply, The Way) and the Camino Finisterre (which literally means, the end of the world). Dating back thousands of years, this walking meditation is a mystical initiation that continues to serve as an alchemical process for distillation, refinement and purification of self.
The themes of magick that permeated their 2022 EP, The Labyrinth continue throughout The Wolf. The album title itself was inspired by both the legendary lore of a shapeshifting Druid Queen of Finisterre, and the life altering encounter Rice and McNalty had with a wolf in the wild after watching the sunset on the final eve of their 40-day trek.
“Tipped off by the clicking sound of claws coming up behind us, we turned to witness this majestically terrifying beast stalking us in the dusk. As we realized what was happening, we faced our fear, stood our ground and looked the wolf straight in the eyes. As if in recognition of our reverence for this divine symbol of The Goddess, the wolf bowed its head to us, low and long. Resisting all urges to walk up and pet it, we had an unforgettable moment of communion.” McNalty recounts.
Threads of their travels are woven into the EP as field recordings, adding an immersive first-hand experience to this visceral collection of songs.
